Chinese steelmakers often add raw materials to maintain production demand during the Lunar New Year holiday, which typically supports ore prices.
Other steelmaking materials on DCE also decreased, in which coke DJMcv1 decreased 1.47% and coke DCJcv1 decreased 1.88%.
Benchmark steel prices on the Shanghai futures exchange are mixed amid sluggish seasonal demand and falling supply due to production curbs at some mills.
Rebar SRBcv1 decreased 0.15%, steel bar SWRCv1 decreased 2.8%, while hot rolled steel coil SHHCcv1 increased 0.19% and stainless steel SHSScv1 increased 1.37%.
Several cities in northern China, including steelmaking hub Tangshan, have announced plans to begin emergency responses, citing worsening air pollution.
Local steelmakers are often asked to limit production in such situations, putting pressure on demand for steelmaking raw materials and supporting prices of steel products.
